How to Choose Your Next Toothbrush

If the bristles of your toothbrush are frayed or if you’ve had it longer than three months, it’s time to buy a one. The task of selecting a new toothbrush may seem a simple one, but there are so many brands and styles available that a trip down the dental aisle of your local grocery store can become a frustrating mental struggle.

When choosing a new toothbrush, make sure it bears the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal ensures the product has been inspected for safety and efficacy. Keep in mind that there are two types of toothbrushes: manual and powered.

Manual: manual toothbrushes tend to be less expensive, but offer the same amount of quality.

Powered: powered—or electric—toothbrushes are more fun for children and require less effort on the part of the user.

Whether you choose manual or powered, look for a toothbrush with a handle that is compatible in size and grip to your hand. The toothbrush head should fit easily in your mouth and be able to navigate the tight corners. For most people, this means buying a smaller brush head.

When you buy a toothbrush, you can help it last longer by rinsing it in tap water after each use and storing it in a clean, dry area (upright, if possible). Avoid closed containers and contact with other toothbrushes.
